The Price of Class Privilege for People in the Upper Class

Note: Obviously, systems of privilege are most harmful to the people oppressed by them, and these lesson plans are in no way designed to diminish that.  It may be helpful to students, though, to see how even advantaged groups are harmed by these systems.

LEARNING GOALS

  • Understand that systems of class privilege take a toll not only on the underprivileged, but on the advantaged as well

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. There are a couple different approaches to the downsides of class privilege for privileged people here:
    1. Have students read the excerpt from The Price of Privilege and discuss
    2. Have students watch the TED Talk on “Does Money Make You Mean” and discuss.  It might be worthwhile to also listen to the Freakonomics podcast, which presents some differing points of view to Piff’s research, then interviews Piff about it.
